In .Net wie auch in anderen API's findet man immer häufiger die Verwendung von sog. MIME Types oder MIME Content Type. MIME Content Types sind Strings (Zeichenkette) welche den Inhalt eines Daten-Streams beschreiben. Anstatt jetzt Windows-Spezifische File-Extensions (Datei-Erweiterungen) zu verwenden, wird zu recht oft dieses universelle Format verwendet. So ist ein GIF-Bild z.B. nicht ein ".gif" sondern ein "image/gif". Auf dieser Seite findet sich eine Auflistung häufig verwendeter MIME-Typen. Anwendungen können auch Ihre eigenen MIME-Typen erfinden, sofern sie ein eigenes Datenformat verwenden.
